The valid and reliable certification of foreign language competences is a challenge – both in terms of content and organization – for institutions responsible for conducting such exams. The aim of the international conference on Competences of the 21st century: Certification of language proficiency was to provide an opportunity for the exchange of theoretical ideas and experiences in constructing and administering examinations in various Polish and foreign university contexts. The present volume is the outcome of this conference. It includes a selection of articles in Polish and English which discuss a range of issues related to the complex process of certification of language proficiency and which present results of research in this narrow yet"(...)Pozycja Online Assessment Security Measures(Palgrave Macmillan, Cham, 2025-09) Sendur, AgnieszkaAbstract: "Online language exams offer a convenient and accessible way to measure proficiency, but ensuring their reliability, validity and fairness requires robust security measures. This chapter explores the evolving landscape of online exam security and the importance of a multifaceted approach. Traditional cheating methods have adapted to the online environment, necessitating constant vigilance from exam security specialists. Standardised security protocols are crucial to maintain stakeholder confidence in test results. While no system is impregnable, multilayered defences throughout the exam cycle significantly deter cheating and uphold exam integrity. These defences encompass a range of measures to safeguard the exam at every stage. This multifaceted approach includes encryption protocols for the secure delivery of exam questions, standardised hardware and software requirements, limitations on background applications and Internet access, and various invigilation methods (live, recorded, or AI-powered). Identity verification techniques like biometric data analysis and environment scans confirm the test taker’s identity and prevent unauthorised assistance. Secure exam delivery is achieved through special browsers that restrict access to the exam webpage only, and secure note-taking provisions minimise the risk of compromising exam content. Finally, advanced security measures like AI-powered monitoring can detect suspicious behaviour, while plagiarism detection safeguards the overall integrity of the exam content. These are discussed based on language certification at-home exams like: IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials, Pearson English International Certificate (PEIC), PTE Academic Online, LanguageCert International ESOL (IESOL), Duolingo English Test (DET) and Occupational English Test at-home version (OET@home)."(...)Pozycja Remote Invigilation(Palgrave Macmillan, Cham, 2025-08) Sendur, AgnieszkaAbstract: "The rapid growth of online education has necessitated innovative approaches to ensure academic integrity. Remote invigilation (RI), also known as online proctoring, has emerged as a critical tool in this endeavour. Encompassing a spectrum of methods—live monitoring by human proctors, recorded exams for later review and automated systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI), and hybrid approaches—RI strives to replicate the controlled environment of traditional exams in a digital space. This, in turn, aims to deter cheating and safeguard the validity of online assessments. This entry explores the different types of RI and the stages involved in the remote proctoring process. While RI offers undeniable benefits, facilitating flexible assessment practices and deterring dishonest behaviour, concerns remain regarding student privacy, potential test anxiety due to constant monitoring, and potential bias within AI-powered systems. By examining RI’s advantages and disadvantages, this entry fosters a discussion about its appropriate and ethical implementation within the online assessment landscape."(...)
