Artykuł przedstawia sylwetkę płk. Jerzego Lewakowskiego, w młodości instruktora skautowego, jednego z pierwszych skautów lwowskich, oficera armii austriackiej walczącego w I wojnie światowej na frontach rosyjskim, serbskim, rumuńskim i włoskim, a potem jako dowódca pociągu pancernego „Śmiały” w czasie walk o Lwów. Po wojnie pracował jako wykładowca w korpusie kadetów i oficer w sztabie. W tym czasie jako podharcmistrz był krótko członkiem naczelnych władz Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego. Już przed wojną opublikował podręczniki i artykuły, głównie z zakresu kartografii i topografii. W okresie międzywojennym służył w sztabach i szkolnictwie wojskowym, od 1932 r. był zastępcą i p.o. komendanta, a w chwili wybuchu wojny – komendantem Wojskowego Instytutu Geograficznego. Dużo publikował, organizował konferencje zjazdy i kongresy naukowe. Był członkiem towarzystw naukowych, członkiem redakcji czasopism i redaktorem naczelnym kwartalnika „Wiadomości Służby Geograficznej”. Po wybuchu II wojny światowej zorganizował ewakuację Instytutu do Lwowa, a potem – Stanisławowa. Uczestniczył w obronie Lwowa jako oficer artylerii. Internowany w Kozielsku i Starobielsku, został przewieziony do Katynia, gdzie został zamordowany.

The article presents the profile of Colonel Jerzy Lewakowski, a scout instructor in his youth, one of the first Lviv scouts, an Austrian army officer fighting in World War I on the Russian, Serbian, Romanian and Italian fronts, and then as the commander of the “Śmiały” armored train during the battles for Lviv. After the war, he worked as a lecturer in the cadet corps and an officer on the staff. At that time, as a scoutmaster, he was briefly a member of the governing bodies of the Polish Scouting Association. Already before the war, he published textbooks and articles mainly in the field of cartography and topography. In the interwar period, he served in military staffs and education, from 1932 as a deputy and acting officer. commandant, and at the outbreak of the war, commander of the Military Geographical Institute. He published a lot and organized conferences, meetings and scientific congresses. He was a member of scientific societies, a member of the editorial board of magazines and the editor-in-chief of the quarterly “Wiadomości Służby Geograficznej” (Geographic Service Messages). When the World War II broke out, he organized the evacuation of the Institute to Lviv and then Stanisławów. He participated in the defense of Lviv as an artillery officer. Interned in Kozielsk and Starobielsk, he was transported to Katyń, where he was murdered.
