Abstrakt
The paper aims at analysing the determinants of regional economic integration in Sub-Saharan Africa
in relation to the European model of integration, perceived as a benchmark for the region. The
paper employs analytic-descriptive analysis, using national and international literature sources and
statistical data of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development – UNCTAD. Research
results show that regional integration processes in Africa are determined by natural conditions, economic
and political determinants, as well as by adopted model of integration. As integration effects
in Africa prove to be highly unsatisfactory, a critical review of adopted integration model seems to
be necessary. International institutions should also verify their approach to African integration in
order to provide this continent with an optimal balance between local regionalism and economic
globalization.
