Cerebral palsy is a syndrome of many symptoms resulting from damage to the
central nervous system. In children with this disorder occurs in addition to movement
disorders such as mental retardation also other problems. The primary goal
of treatment of children with cerebral palsy is to alleviate the symptoms, taking
into account the damage to the brain and the individual child’s potential.
Parents behave differently with respect to their disabled child. You can extract
the different stages of parenting: shock, emotional crisis, virtual and constructive adaptation to the situation. Parents can show negative or positive attitudes
towards their disabled children. A positive attitude is the meaning of the child’s
needs, acceptance of his physical and mental capabilities. However, a negative
attitude is characterized by avoidance or rejection of the child, which is most
common in families pathological or disturbed in families with emotional ties.
The family as a basic unit of society, is of great importance in the process of raising
a child, which may affect the subsequent relationship with the environment
and the possibility of a child with disabilities to overcome their weaknesses,
and thus success in improving. Understanding the nature of parental attitudes
towards the disabled child is, therefore, particularly important for the development
of the child being with cerebral palsy.
